Lessons on Reading Lead to Award for Writing
for the Acclaimed PBS KIDS Series

Boston – May 17, 2004– Roars of thanks can be heard from the lions’ library! The PBS KIDS series BETWEEN THE LIONS (pbskids.org/lions), the first and only children’s television program with the primary goal of helping children learn to read using a research-based curriculum, has received a 2004 Daytime Emmy Award for Outstanding Writing in a Children’s Series, amidst formidable fellow nominees Bear in the Big Blue House, Blue’s Clues and Sesame Street. Presented by the National Television Academy at the 31st Annual Creative Craft Awards Ceremony in New York on Saturday, this is the sixth Daytime Emmy for the series in its four seasons. BETWEEN THE LIONS is produced by the creative team of WGBH Boston and Sirius Thinking, Ltd., under Executive Producer Judith Stoia and Sirius Thinking Executive Producers Christopher Cerf and Norman Stiles.

“This series continues to be applauded by critics, educators and viewers alike, and we couldn’t be prouder of this latest honor,” says Brigid Sullivan, Vice President for Children’s, Educational and Interactive Programming and Media Access at WGBH. “The talented writers on this series certainly deserve to be commended for their creativity in bringing to life brilliantly crafted episodes that not only entertain, but have been proven to help kids learn to read.”

The BETWEEN THE LIONS writing team, headed by Norman Stiles, includes: Christopher Cerf, Sarah Durkee, Joe Fallon, Louise Gikow, Carin Greenberg-Baker, Sean Kelly, Sharon Lerner, Brian Meehl, Gentry Menzel, Fred Newman, and Ken Scarborough.
